Jeff Liberty earned his blues chops on the sidewalks New Orleans' French Quarter, the back streets of St. Louis, and Beale Street in Memphis. Since 1988, Liberty's scorching guitar and smoky voice have led him down 47 miles of barbed wire, treading paths first blazed by Freddy King, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, and The Doors, delighting fans, gaining the respect of veteran blues performers, and wowing critics. Landing in Columbia, South Carolina in 2000, Liberty immediately blew the doors off of the local music scene and was voted "Best Local Solo Artist" in Columbia's Free Times Reader's Poll. A year later he formed the Jeff Liberty Band and was named "Best New Local Band" and "Best Local Blues Band" by Free Times readers in 2001. Stomping through the bars, juke joints, and blues festivals throughout the Southeast, Liberty has performed with Kenny Neal, Shrimp City Slim, Juke Joint Johnny, Sonny Landreth, Little Charlie and the Nightcats, and many others. He has opened for The Eagles, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, and The Marshall Tucker Band. He holds an honorary lifetime membership in The Beale Street Cadillac Blues Band in Memphis. Here is a video of Jeff during a live acoustic performance. We'll have a video of the full band later. Suitcase at the Door
Starting in the summer of 2003, Papa String Band members, Daron LaBruyere and Brett Mello, started turning heads on the rocks of the Broad River. Many would gather 'round to listen to their new take on ol' time bluegrass. In May of 2004, the duo decided to take their act to local bars and restaurants. They've been performing ever since. In January of 2005, talented keyboardist, Will Smith, joined up with Papa String in an attempt by all to stretch the boundaries of traditional bluegrass music. The band expanded their lineup with the additions of bass player, Gary Bishop; percussionist, Jackson Wools; harmonica player, Mike Fore; and Chris Jones on the drum kit. This combination of unconventional instrumentation allowed the band to push beyond bluegrass, opening the doors for new experimentation and endless musical possibilities. The Papa String Band's "signature blend" of music is infused with the influences of blues, bluegrass, jazz, psychedelic, jam and funk. Their music has been described as "Americana," "Jam," and even "Southern fried Grateful Dead." Papa String just calls it, "Funky Newgrass Honk." This is music that captures all ages and leaves fans with a smile on their face. The Papa String Band has evolved into an ever-changing, spontaneous, and unpredictable sensory experience, so "kick off your shoes, and hold on to your booze" cause the Papa String Band's coming to town!
