Rebecca Cannon and Thor play ethereal pop merging a wide array of influences such as Cat Power, Elliott Smith, Lisa Germano and Patsy Cline combined with the edge of Tom Waits, Patti Smith and Chrissie Hynde. Rebecca Cannon and Thor have played music in Austin for many joyful years. The Following will describe what they have accomplished and what they are up to now.
Rebecca Cannon has played music in Austin since 1992, when she played trumpet for local punksters Stretford for a brief stint. She left Stretford to join local pop legends Sincola. Sincola was quite popular in the mid-nineties. Sincola was played on college and community radio around the world and gained a certain amount of national and international press. After playing with Sincola for almost five years, Rebecca then went on to form several bands, Scarlitt and Lucille. After several years of exploration, Rebecca finally settled on playing solo. Rebecca has been very busy this last year. She was the lead in local indie film "WYSIWYG," directed by Jody Vernon, and also appeared in the film "My Name is Buttons." She was also cast as the opposite lead in a German music video, "Cornflake," for a band called Headcase. In addition to this, she has been providing her music for local filmmakers, such as Valerie Perreault, who featured two of her songs in a short film entitled "Kill Your Boyfriend," which was featured at the Seattle Underground Film Festival and written up by the Seattle Times. Most recently, Rebecca was in a Sam Shepard play called "Black Bog Beast Bait" at the Blue Theater in East Austin. She played percussion in the house band along with Thor and Darcie Deaville, sang songs throughout the play and served as the sole puppeteer for the production. She had so much fun playing with Thor she asked him to join her solo project as a drummer and percussionist, thus creating a powerful duet.
You might remember Thor from two very popular Austin bands, Stick People and the Gretchen Phillips Experience. Thor has toured with national bands such as Lisa Germano and currently tours and records with Angels of Light (based out of New York) which features prominent members of the late-eigties/early-nineties Goth band the Swans. Thor also plays with Austin's own Robinson Ear Machine. When Thor is not playing drums, he is an art teacher at an alternative high school, a prestigious local painter, a bike repair mechanic, and the foreman for his own construction company. Thor is also building his own house from recycled materials, which has earned press in the Austin Chronicle.
